Testing mouse off together with the nested formats -- the combination never tried -- the status bar holds. So mouse mode is the trigger and the window formats were innocent; the earlier commit blaming them changed two things at once and credited the wrong one. Restores the circled numbers. mouse off stays, since turning it back on reproduced the fault immediately with plain formats already in place. Marked tentative: observed steady over a short window, not yet across a long session.
